Firework Safety Demonstrations

Fourth of July Safety

Firework safety is a key topic for agencies across Los Angeles County, particularly the Fire Department. The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate, but it is not a time to ignore the law by setting off illegal fireworks. Though they are legal in some states, fireworks that are not approved by the California State Fire Marshal are illegal in California and all fireworks are illegal in Los Angeles County (except those cities who have approved State approved fireworks). All fireworks have the potential to cause serious injuries or even death if improperly used.

Along with the Grossman Burn Foundation, the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Sheriff’s Department held a press conference on July 26, 2017 regarding the dangers of illegal fireworks. Held at the Cecil R. Gehr Fire Combat Training Center, the 2017 Fourth of July fireworks news conference highlighted the importance of safety when using any type of fireworks, even legal and seemingly “safe” sparklers.

Leave Fireworks to the Professionals

We cannot stress enough the importance of leaving fireworks to the professionals. On the Fourth of July, you can enjoy stunning fireworks displays across Los Angeles County by trained professionals. There is no need to put yourself, your family, and your property in danger by handling fireworks.

In 2016 alone, Los Angeles County Fire Department dispatchers received more than 3,400 calls regarding fireworks. 9 people were injured, and in the weeks before and after the Fourth of July holiday, there were 31 fires in Los Angeles County caused by fireworks. These accidents, injuries, and fires were entirely preventable.

Stay Safe this Fourth of July

Every year, thousands of people are burned, disfigured, and otherwise injured by fireworks. These powerful explosives can cause loss of limb, blindness, and other catastrophic injuries. They are also responsible for millions of dollars in property damage in the U.S. each year.

This Fourth of July, do not purchase or handle illegal fireworks. If you want to see a fireworks display, attend a show put on by trained professionals. Don’t spend your holiday in jail or in the hospital. There are countless displays across the greater LA area to enjoy.
